Over 250,000 people in Ireland are living with diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes. Correct management can help ensure long term health and well-being.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that (at any age) causes your cells to kill off insulin producing beta cells making insulin production impossible. It occurs very quickly and is associated with having:
• another autoimmune condition,
• a parent/sibling with same condition, and
• environmental factors (common infections).

Symptoms include:
• Extreme thirst,
• Frequent urination,
• Weight loss,
• Hunger, and
• Fatigue.

Unfortunately Type 1 Diabetes is not curable but correct management (correct insulin, food and exercise balances) can lead to long term health and happiness.

Type 2 Diabetes occurs when your body (pancreas) is not functioning effectively to produce enough insulin to the body. It occurs slowly (typically during adulathood) and can take several years of raised glucose levels before diagnosis.

Symptoms include:
• Thirst and frequent urination,
• High blood pressure,
• Fatigue,
• Urinary tract infections,
• Neuropathy, and
• Repeat infections.

Blood sugar level maintenance combined with safe exercise prescription and medication can help control Type 2 Diabetes resulting in long term health and happiness.
